Featured Destinations

Edinburgh

Dominated by the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, this picturesque city offers shopping on Princes Street, the grandeur of the Royal Mile, St. Giles Cathedral and historic Palace of Holyrood House, where Queen Mary lived and many Scottish kings were wed. Or venture across the moors to marvel at the scenic Highlands.

Oban

Tucked into a bay at the top of the Argyll Peninsula on the central west coast of Scotland, Oban is a ferry port for the islands and a center for Gaelic history and culture. McCaig's Tower, a replica of the Colosseum of Rome, was built in 1900 by a local banker. Argyll, home of the Clan Campbell, was once the ancient Scottish Kingdom of Dalriada. In mist-shrouded Kilmartin Glen, one of the most beautiful in Scotland, are the ruins of Dunadd Castle, where a weathered rock inscribed with a boar head marks where Scottish kings were crowned until the 11th century. Nearby, stone circles attest to a civilization dating back 5,000 years. Loch Fyne is where the present head of the Campbells, the Duke of Argyll, makes his home at Inverary Castle. The 19th century castle was admired by Sir Walter Scott as a fine example of the Scottish baronial style.

Stirling

The history of Stirling is rich with legends and events from the figure of William Wallace who fought and won the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 against an occupying English army to the Battle of Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce's defeat of another English army in June 1314 secured Scottish independence. Stirling heritage dates back 800 years to the 12th century, when the town first received the burgh title. It was granted a Royal Charter, becoming one of the most important towns of medieval Scotland. Stirling's importance developed from the fact it controlled the lowest crossing point of the River Forth. John Knox regularly preached in the Church of the Holy Rude next to Stirling Castle. The area of the burgh covers most of the region spreading outwards to include villages such as St. Ninians, Causewayhead, Bridge of Allan and Torbrex, which were once very separate communities, making them part of the bigger picture of Stirling as the ancient ‘Royal Capital’.

Fort William

At the southern end of the Great Glen, this area's main town is Fort William, a major and well-resourced touring and route centre for the West Highlands. The area also takes in the Highland landscapes between Loch Linnhe, the major sea-loch at the south of the Great Glen, and the western seaboard itself. These include the lands of Ardnamurchan, Ardgour, Morvern and Moidart - rugged landscapes notable for their soft and mild Atlantic climate, and - in places - their lush growth of mossy, fern-rich woodlands.

Carlisle

Carlisle is located north of England and perched between England and Scotland. Located in Cumbria county, the town is historically known to have been England’s frontline defenses withstanding the brute sieges of the Vikings and the Scots. The fortified town was first established by Roman historian Tacitus who between 73 and 122 AD built two forts that overlooked the Caldew and Eden Rivers. By 1092, Carlisle Castle was built and 30 years later, walls fortified the castle grounds.

Carlisle has survived many sieges and 900 years of British history housing royal guests, imprisoning a notorious reiver, and converting its stoned fortress into army headquarters. Visitors can stroll through Carlisle reminiscing its vibrant history.
