Homemade Modern Mexican Cuisine with a Young Couple in their Home - Day Trip

Alex lives with his wife Alejandra (Ale) in downtown Mexico City, just blocks from the Plaza de la Constitución. Alex is a K3 teacher in the American School Foundation, while Ale is a professional tour guide who is passionate about sharing her Mexican culture and cuisine with guests. Ale has a wealth of knowledge about the country's history, anthropology, folklore, and of course, culinary traditions. Alex was first inspired by cooking by the tradition of the delicious nopales (grilled cactus) served at his grandfather’s house every Sunday. He first learned to cook watching his mother, and then in his early 20s he experimented by watching food shows on TV. The smells and flavors of his childhood and family meals inspired him to cook more, and now he loves sharing this knowledge with his 6-year old students during their cooking class. Both Alex and Ale love sharing meals with friends and family as much as they enjoy cooking. Join Alex and Ale for a meal in their simple yet modern and vibrant apartment. The food will be a mix of modern Mexican dishes as well as Pueblan cuisine, where Ale comes from. While you sip on your welcome drink, Alex and Ale will talk to you about the importance of food in Mexican culture. Then sit together to enjoy dishes like enchiladas (corn tortillas rolled around a savory meat or vegetable filling), tacos dorados (crispy fried tacos), albondigas (Mexican meatballs) and flavorful sauces like mole poblano and pipián (traditional seasoned sauces served over various meats). If you book a cooking experience, you will join Alex in the kitchen to learn to make 1-2 of the dishes you will be eating later. You might learn dishes like enmoladas, corn tortillas stuffed with chicken in a mole sauce. Mole is a dark chocolate-based sauce with lots of spices that is very popular in Mexico, and easy to cook - a great sauce to add to your Mexican cooking repertoire. As Alex and Ale have a small kitchen you can expect to do the cooking preparation in the bar area and will use the kitchen for the final cooking. You can also let Alex and Ale know at the time of booking if you want to learn a particular dish. Alex and Ale also offer and optional market tour add-on; if you book a market tour, you will enjoy a tour of San Juan market, a traditional Mexican market in the historic center of Mexico City that specializes in gourmet and exotic foods. Please note that due to their work schedules Alex and Ale are only available for dinners (not lunches) on weekdays. Market tour experiences are unavailable on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On weekends Alex and Ale are available for any experience type for both lunch and dinner. Also please note that the market closes at 5pm, so if you book an evening market tour experience please be punctual to ensure you have enough time at the market!

Mexico City

From the Alameda, a leafy center of activity since Aztec times, to the Zona Rosa, a chic shopping neighborhood, Mexico City offers endless options to urban adventurers.

Founded by the Aztecs as Tenochtitlán in 1325, Mexico City is both the oldest and the highest (7,349 ft) metropolis on the North American continent. And with nearly 24 million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in the world. It is Mexico's cultural, political, and financial core -- braving the 21st century but clinging to its deeply entrenched Aztec heritage.

You only need to stand in the center of the Plaza of Three Cultures to visually comprehend the undisputed significance of this city. Here, the remains of an Aztec pyramid, a colonial church, and a towering modern office building face one another, a testament to the city's prominence in ancient and contemporary history. Located at the heart of the Americas, Mexico City has been a center of life and commerce for more than 2,000 years. The Teotihuacán, Toltec, Aztec, and European conquistadors all contributed to the city's fascinating evolution, art, and heritage. Although residents refer to their city as simply México (meh-hee-koh), its multitude of ancient ruins, colonial masterpieces, and modern architecture has prompted others to call it "The City of Palaces."

The central downtown area resembles a European city, dominated by ornate buildings and broad boulevards, and interspersed with public art, parks, and gardens. This sprawling city is thoroughly modern and, in places, unsightly and chaotic, but it never strays far from its historical roots. In the center are the partially excavated ruins of the main Aztec temple; pyramids rise just beyond the city.
