Cadiz is an old city with Andalusian character. The magnificent Baroque cathedral and impressive mansions were built with gold. Cadiz’s modern-day treasure lies 30 minutes to the north in the rolling hills of Jerez - where production of the liquid gold, as the famous sherry is often called, ensures a booming economy. Located in the north-west of France in Brittany is the city of Brest. An important port and naval base, the Germans used the city as a large submarine base during World War II. After suffering major damage during the war, the city was rebuilt. One of the regions most visited tourist attractions, Brest is home to Oceanopolis, the largest open-air aquarium in Europe.

Cherbourg is built on the probable site of the Roman camp of Coriallum. By the 11th century the community was known as Carusbar or Carusburc. It was sacked by the English in 1295, but it withstood several English sieges during the following two centuries. Projects for the fortification and improvement of the harbour were initiated in the 17th century. In 1758 Cherbourg was captured by the British, and its port facilities were destroyed; they were restored in a long-term project begun in the 1770s and completed in the mid 19th century. During World War II the city was occupied by the Germans in 1940, and it suffered heavy damage while being recaptured by the Allies in 1944. Zeebrugge is an important port city in Flanders, connecting Belgium’s intricate railway and canal transportation systems. South Queensferry still offers an environment that can transport visitors back to an earlier time more readily than most places in Scotland. South Queensferry offers one of the most interesting collections of buildings anywhere. The oldest is St Mary's church, which dates from 1441. "Black Castle", built on the High Street in 1626 is the oldest house in South Queensferry, which was built for a sea captain who was lost with his ship. The nearby Tollbooth was built in the 1600s, though the tower dates back only to 1720. The High Street itself has an unusual stepped cross section designed to cope with the town's steeply sloping site above the shore. This has led to elevated pavements on the inland side of the street, which add to the atmosphere. For very obvious reasons, plus proximity to Edinburgh, South Queensferry is an extremely popular place. It is worth making an effort to try and catch it at a quiet time: that way visitors can still catch glimpses of the South Queensferry of the 1700s Robert Louis Stevenson featured in "Kidnapped".

This village at the head of the bay Berufiord developed around an important trading post in the past. In 1589 the German Hansa merchants were granted a trading license there by the Danish king. Later on the Danish introduced the trade monopoly and took over themselves. The oldest houses (1788-1818) date back to the Danish period. One of them, Langabud (1790), has been renovated and transformed into a nice restaurant and museums. Fishing, fish processing and commerce are the main trades. Nanortalik means 'place of bears'. It is Greenland's southernmost town, the district border extends all the way from the island Qeqertarsuaq, north west of Alluitsup Paa to the Cape Farewell area and to the 60 kilometers long Lindenow Fjord in East Greenland. The area is approx. 15,000 square kilometers.

The most renowned feature in the area is the Nanortalik skyscrapers - the steep peaks and sheer mountain walls lining the Tasermiut Fjord, Pamiagdluk, Prins Christianssund and Lindenow Fjord. Names like Ketil Mountain and Ulamertorsuaq are well known to most rock and mountain climbers in the world. The mountains in this area are just as challenging as the Alps and only experienced climbers should give it a go.

The sealhunters move to the outermost islands in the spring to hunt the big hooded seal, because the seals' migratory route passes through these islands along with the field ice. Here, the hunter culture remains unspoilt for many generations. The supply for summer and winter is prepared on the islands.

The place got its name, Nanortalik, because the polar bears drift by on big ice floes in the field ice from East Greenland. Each year several polarbears are spotted in the area, but they are of no danger to the inhabitants.

In the spring and in the late summer the waters surrounding the municipality are filled with whales, of which the most frequent is the minke whale.

Qaqortoq means "The White Place", and the town is the educational and cultural center of Southern Greenland. The sheep farms give this part of Greenland special character. Qaqortoq has a sculpture park "Stone and Man" made by 18 Nordic sculptors. The result is 24 sculptures and reliefs spread all over town. Greenland's only public fountain is in the town square. The square is the historical part of town, with many buildings from colonial times and a museum concentrating on Greenlandic culture, the Norse period and the history of Qaqortoq. Close to the square is "Brædtet" market where local fishermen and hunters sell the days catch. There are 2 churches in town; "Frelserens" from 1832 and "Gertrud Raschs" from 1973. "Frelserens" hans the lifebuoy and memorial tablet with the names of those missing from M/S Hans Hedtoft, which went down in January 1959. "Gertrud Raschs" has one of Greenlands most beautiful altar pieces made by artist Maria Haagen-Müller.

Built along the base of the Kuannersooq Fjord, the maritime town of Paamiut is highlighted by scenic architecture and old shops, stables and the old church. White tailed eagles flock to Paamiut en masse, and in the surrounding sea, you may catch sight of whales - orcas and humpback among many others.

St Pierre is the southernmost island of the territory of St Pierre and Miquelon situated in the North Atlantic Ocean south of the coast of Newfoundland.
