This large, bustling port is the starting point for tours to the ancient cities of Kyoto and Nara, the cultural fountainheads of classical Japan. Kobe, located in Japan, is capital of Hyogo Prefecture, southwestern Honshu Island, on Osaka Bay, near the city of Osaka. Since the 1890s several adjoining cities, including Hyogo, have been absorbed by Kobe. Behind the narrow coastal site of the city are mountains on which suburban residences and hotels have been built. Many Christian churches, Shinto and Buddhist temples and shrines, two famous statues of Buddha, a fine arts museum, and a municipal museum with a collection on Western cultural contact are in Kobe. From here you can also visit Kyoto, Nara and Sorakuen Garden.
Okayama is home to some of the most beautiful attractions in Japan. Kurashiki means the “warehouse village.” During the feudal era, the warehouses were used to store rice from the surrounding area. Many of the warehouses have now been converted into museums. Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan's smallest prefecture. The Matsudaira Clan, relatives of the Tokugawa, controlled the former castle town and surrounding region, then known as Sanuki, during most of the Edo Period.
Miyajima Island, perhaps best known for the floating torii gateway to the Itsukushima Shrine, stunningly reflected in Hiroshima Bay. This is one of the most photographed spots in all of Japan.
Hiroshima in southwestern Honshu has grown rapidly as a commercial city, and after 1868 it was developed as a military base. Every August 6 since 1947, thousands participate in multidenominational services in the Peace Memorial Park built on the site where the bomb exploded. After the war the city was largely rebuilt, and commercial activity gradually resumed. Visit the Peace Park but also explore Miyajima Island and its colourful shrines and mysterious forests.
The town of Uwajima is located 60km north of Sukumo. It is surrounded by the beautiful Uma-Sea and steep mountains. Uwajima is famous for its sumo-style bullfights and the Uwajima Castle which is the symbol of the city. The town boasts peaceful backstreets with old wooden houses and temples. The Tenshaen Garden is over 280 years old and is famous for spring and Japanese wistarias.

Yakushima Island became Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, and its natural wonders will astound you. Yakushima has a particularly diverse flora, with some 1,900 species and subspecies, including ancient specimens of the sugi (Japanese cedar). It also contains a remnant of a warm-temperate ancient forest that is unique in this region.
Kagoshima, a seaport on Kyushu Island, Japan, is sheltered within Kagoshima Bay and is the commercial and cultural center of southern Kyushu. Products manufactured here include a famous type of earthenware known as Satsumaware. Sights of interest include the Iso Garden and the local Theatre.
One of Japan's most historic cities, Nagasaki was a major port, trading with the Portuguese and Dutch in the 16th century. You can still see this colonial legacy in the brick buildings, old forts, canals and curving cobblestone streets. Hagi is a former castle town, off the major transport ways, along the tranquil Sea of Japan coast in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Hagi is best known for its nicely preserved former castle town and local pottery, which ranks among Japan's finest.
Hagi used to be the capital of the Mori daimyo (feudal lords), who governed present Yamaguchi Prefecture (then known as Choshu) for more than 200 years, and played a central role in overthrowing the shogunate and bringing an end to Japan's feudal age in the second half of the 19th century.
Matsue's major draw is its Matsue Castle, which is one of the original castles of twelve castles left in Japan. Built in 1611, it features artifacts from the Matsudaira warrior tribe, including their armor and swords. Climb to the top of the castle to experience sweeping views of both the city and the nearby Lake Shinji. Visit the largest greenhouse in the world at Vogel Park and its aviary, or strll through the Yuushien Japanese Garden's year-round blooming House of Peony. For art, view the rotating exhibitions at the Shimane Art Museum. Shrines, temples and gardens are laced throughout the city. Venture to Lake Shinji to watch the sunset, or take a boat ride in the network of canals near the castle.
Kanazawa's importance grew in the 15th century, when the powerful and militant Ikko sect established its new headquarters there after being chased out of Kyoto by the monks of Mt.Hiei.
During the Edo Period, Kanazawa was the seat of the Maeda clan, the second most powerful clan after the Tokugawa in terms of rice production and fief size. Accordingly, Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo).
In World War Two, Kanazawa was Japan's second largest city (after Kyoto) to escape destruction by air raids. Consequently, parts of the old castle town, such as samurai, temple and pleasure districts, have survived in pretty good condition.

Niigata has a long history as a port and is distinguished for being the site of one of only five international ports opened in 1868 when Japan resumed contact with other countries after nearly 250 years of self-imposed isolation. Since that time, Niigata has developed into one of Japan's most important modern international ports.
Geographically, the city is distinctive in that it is surrounded by water. The Shinano and Agano, two of the largest rivers in Japan, run through the heart of Niigata before emptying into the Japan Sea. In addition, until relatively recently, the city was crisscrossed by a series of canals used to transport goods. Although the canals have been filled in to make the construction of modern roadways possible, the willows that lined these canals still remain today and now serve to lend a gentle air to the bustling downtown area.
Although Niigata has grown into an important regional center of activity, the city has pursued a plan of careful development in order to preserve its traditional culture, natural environment, and distinctive local character.
