Arniston

Nestling in a bay of turquoise sea, white sand and rocky coves lies Arniston – a little-known gem on the Cape south east coast. Discover an authentic fishing village – also known as Kassiesbaai – dating back to the early 19th Century, and now a national monument. This close-knit community of 100 welcomes visitors with age-old friendliness and hospitality. Wander down to the harbor to see what the day's catch has brought: salmon, kabeljou, steenbras and yellowtail can be bought straight off the boats. A traditional meal of home-baked bread, bredie, freshly caught fish and 'slaphakskeentjies' – a local delicacy of sweet and sour onions – is not to be missed. Stock up on souvenirs – paintings of local landscapes are outstanding, and remarkably inexpensive. A visit to Arniston is not complete without exploring the massive Waenhuiskrans Wagon House Cave – so named because it is large enough to turn a wagon with a full team of oxen.
