Man is a 33-mile long island in the middle of the Irish Sea 60 miles west of England’s Lancashire coast. It is a Crown dependency with its own parliament, laws, currency, culture and postage stamps. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, it is a popular destination for English tourists. Man maintains a great deal of its Victorian-era transportation system, including a steam railway and horse-drawn trams. It is also home to one of the oldest motor-racing series, the Tourist Trophy, an important element in the development of automobiles and motorcycles. The island is known for its pastoral countryside, its woolens and, of course, its famous tail-less Manx cats. The island’s flag holds The Three Legs of Man: a symbolic figure made up simply of three legs joined at the hip, the knees bent as if running. This fulfills the kingdom’s defiant motto, which, loosely translated says: “Whichever way you throw me, I stand.
Douglas has been the capital, principal port, and ferry terminal of the island since 1869, the island itself having become a Crown possession in 1828. It gets its name from the Dhoo and Glass Rivers. Douglas, which developed around smuggling, now has light industry, tourism, the seat of the island's parliament, the Tynwald and House of Keys (oldest parliament in the world). Douglas boasts Castle Mona (1804), and the Tower of Refuge (1832), as well as the impressive Manx Electric Railway (1893) and Douglas horse-drawn trams (1876), both of which are still in service. Located along the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man and its wooded hills and jagged coastline offer some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. The island was once occupied by Celts who left behind Iron Age forts and huts. Though Romans never settled here, it is believed Celtic Christianity was introduced by St. Patrick and flourished from the fifth century to eighth century when Vikings conquered the island. Tobermory, the primary town on the Isle of Mull, began as a fishing port during the latter part of the 18th century. However, in recent times the area has become an excellent destination for those interested in marine wildlife watching. The waters surrounding Mull are popular feeding grounds for dolphins, basking sharks and wales, Lucky visitors may also catch a glimpse of rare White-Tail and Golden Eagles that call the island home. Other popular sights in Tobermory include the Baliscate Standing Stones that still remain from one of the earliest settlements in the village, The Mull Museum and Aros Park.
Eigg is one of the small isles in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. The island is a wildlife refuge but is open to visitors that can reach the island by ferry. The Heritage Trust erected a new building to house shops and a tearoom for visitors to enjoy. Seal colonies inhabit the island's coastal waters, while dolphins and Minke whales also frequent the coast. There is an abundance of birds, plants and mammal, and visitors will be astonished by all that this island has to view.

The name Stornoway comes from the Norse for "Steering Bay", an indication of the early origins of the town. As the best natural harbor in the Western Isles it was a focus for development, and Stornoway Castle was built as early as 1100 by the MacNicol family. Today's Stornoway is a busy, attractive town and the largest settlement in the Western Isles. The shape of the town is defined by the harbour, which partially surrounds it. Visit an interesting range of shops pleasantly different from the usual outlets colonising most UK High Streets. Visitors to Stornoway should be aware that Sunday observance is strong here. Most transport links to Lewis and Harris, and within them, do not operate on a Sunday. Most shops, petrol stations, cafes, pubs, visitor attractions are closed on Sundays, as are at least some public toilets.
St. Kilda is a volcanic archipelago belonging to western Scotland, and it is now one of the country’s World Heritage Sites. The island is home to some of the biggest sea cliffs in Britain, and is known for the abundance of wild life including birds. St. Kilda now is an isolated island, however for thousands of years it was inhabited by locals that were forced to move out due to bad conditions, ruins of such villages are still standing today.
The Shetland Islands are Great Britain's most northerly islands, situated nearly fifty miles northeast of the Orkneys. Lerwick is the capital of the principal island of Mainland and is Britain's most northerly town. Founded on the fishing industry and with strong Viking connections, little now remains of the old village of Lerwick. Features of interest include the Cromwellian Fort Charlotte and annual Norse fire festival, Up-Helly-Aa, held every January. On the southern tip of the island is Jarlshof, site of ruins of several Stone Age and Bronze Age dwellings as well as wheel-houses from the Iron Age. Elsewhere on the island is Clichimin Broch, another prehistoric site containing a Bronze Age fort.
The Isle of Noss has a small inlet named Papil Geo, and visitors can walk along the path here and take in the stunning landscape, and ocean views. Try sea kayaking around the beautiful coastline as you discover the unique geology of the islands, and look out for seals, penguins, and seabirds.

Heimaey, off the coast of Iceland, is one of 15 volcanic Westman Islands - home to "Keiko" the star of the "Free Willy" movies. The island is buzzing with life and there are some truly spectacular sights. The perfectly formed natural harbor area has tall cliffs tenanted by multitudes of puffin, fulmar and guillemot. Sprangan is a cliff where young islanders are taught the rope swinging sport. Herjólfsdalur Valley has ruins of old farmhouses dating back to 650 AD. The western part of the island provides an opportunity to view outer islands. 'Stórhöfdi' has magnificent views over the island and majestic glaciers of mainland Iceland and is home to the island's largest puffin colony. Two volcanoes in Heimaey are 5,000-year-old "Helgafell" (Holy Mountain) and the Eldfell (Mt. Fire), whose history is more recent and which offers a viewpoint. A road through the lava field passes the center of the volcano's crater, the ruins of a house buried in lava, and the main streets. Skansinn wooden church was donated to the people of Islands by Norway to commemorate the millennium of Christianity in Iceland.

The fire, frost and water symbolized by the red, white and blue of Iceland’s flag are manifested in this land. Reykjavik, or Smoky Bay, was so named in 874 A.D. by Ingolf Arnarson when he sighted the numerous hot springs on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula. Today this remarkably pollution-free city is wrapped around a sweeping bay and has managed to retain its charming Old-World atmosphere. A pastiche of red-blue-and green-roofed houses together with the tall gray tower of Hallgrim’s Church dominate the skyline. In Old Town, many of the wooden buildings have been lovingly restored and stand side by side with modern timber and concrete structures. Flatey Island is located in the Breidafjordur on the west coast of Iceland. Here you will find an abundance of birds - Arctic terns, red-throated divers, and black guillemots. Watch the seas for the minke, humpback, and orca whales that frequent these waters.

Akureyri is one of Iceland's oldest towns, and features picturesque historic houses set below snowcapped peaks, botanical gardens and several museums. Explore the interior to see Godafoss Waterfall and Lake Myvatn. It is the largest settlement outside the south-west of Iceland, and one of the country's largest cities. Jan Mayen Island is a volcanic island in an area partly covered by glacier, in Norway. For many years no one was allowed to visit the island, but recently the tiny island has become available to tourists. There are several large lakes on the islands, overshadowed by the Beerenberg volcano, which may be climbed with permission form the station commander on the island. Jan Mayen is home to many birds, from the albatross-like fulmar to the black-and-white puffin. Visitors will also see harper seals and various species of whale swimming in the chilly waters.

Known for its stark mountain peaks and spectacular glaciers, Longyearbyen was named for the American John Monroe Longyear, who established a mining operation here in 1906. In the summer season, many species of birds can be found nesting in the steep cliffs while the seaside harbors a number of marine animals from white whales, seals and walruses.
