The Shetland Islands are Great Britain's most northerly islands, situated nearly fifty miles northeast of the Orkneys. Lerwick is the capital of the principal island of Mainland and is Britain's most northerly town. Founded on the fishing industry and with strong Viking connections, little now remains of the old village of Lerwick. Features of interest include the Cromwellian Fort Charlotte and annual Norse fire festival, Up-Helly-Aa, held every January. On the southern tip of the island is Jarlshof, site of ruins of several Stone Age and Bronze Age dwellings as well as wheel-houses from the Iron Age. South Queensferry still offers an environment that can transport visitors back to an earlier time more readily than most places in Scotland. South Queensferry offers one of the most interesting collections of buildings anywhere. The oldest is St Mary's church, which dates from 1441. "Black Castle", built on the High Street in 1626 is the oldest house in South Queensferry, which was built for a sea captain who was lost with his ship. The nearby Tollbooth was built in the 1600s, though the tower dates back only to 1720. The High Street itself has an unusual stepped cross section designed to cope with the town's steeply sloping site above the shore. This has led to elevated pavements on the inland side of the street, which add to the atmosphere. For very obvious reasons, plus proximity to Edinburgh, South Queensferry is an extremely popular place. It is worth making an effort to try and catch it at a quiet time: that way visitors can still catch glimpses of the South Queensferry of the 1700s Robert Louis Stevenson featured in "Kidnapped".

Jan Mayen Island is a volcanic island in an area partly covered by glacier, in Norway. For many years no one was allowed to visit the island, but recently the tiny island has become available to tourists. There are several large lakes on the islands, overshadowed by the Beerenberg volcano, which may be climbed with permission form the station commander on the island. Jan Mayen is home to many birds, from the albatross-like fulmar to the black-and-white puffin. Visitors will also see harper seals and various species of whale swimming in the chilly waters.
Scoresby Sund is the largest fjord system in the world. This destination is located on the eastern coast of Greenland. The name honors the English explorer William Scoresby, who mapped the fjord area in great detail in 1822. Nuuk was founded by the unfailingly optimistic Hans Egede - the Danish missionary with soul-conversions on his mind - who promptly named the settlement Good Hope. Today Nuuk is small by modern standards, with a total population of only 14,000. Despite a wealth of land and a paucity of people, Nuuk has insisted on housing the population in immense apartment blocks with imaginative names like Blok P - a kind of Gulag on ice - and the urban sprawl is now spreading out along the road to the airport. Kolonihavnen is a pleasant exception to the rest of Nuuk's Lego-city look: it's a picturesque 18th-century fishing village in the heart of Nuuk and gives some idea of what the town looked like before the industrial harbour was built. Nuuk's real attraction lies in its proximity to any number of excellent day hikes into the hinterland and the fabulous views from the tops of the nearby mountains. Sisimiut is a growing town located in western Greenland. It is one of the main village destinations in Greenland, and an administrative center for the Qeqqata Municipality. The population of Sisimiut was recorded of 5,598 inhabitants living in the town in 2013. One of the main attractions is the multicolor Northern Lights of the Aurora Borealis that take place during the months of September to April. Aside from this amazing phenomenon, many visitors come to Sisimiut to enjoy activities such as fishing, hiking, and dog sledding.
Ilulissat means icebergs in Greenlandic, and the town has a beautiful location at the mouth of an ice fjord that is filled with enormous icebergs, and is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. North of Ilulissat lies the settlement of Oqaatsut/Rodebay, where some of the old buildings from colonial times are today restaurants or huts available for rent. Ilulissat is a modern town but is also know as the dogsled town for all its sleds and snow dogs, and visitors can share in the sledding fun.

Nanortalik means 'place of bears'. It is Greenland's southernmost town, the district border extends all the way from the island Qeqertarsuaq, north west of Alluitsup Paa to the Cape Farewell area and to the 60 kilometers long Lindenow Fjord in East Greenland. The area is approx. 15,000 square kilometers.
The most renowned feature in the area is the Nanortalik skyscrapers - the steep peaks and sheer mountain walls lining the Tasermiut Fjord, Pamiagdluk, Prins Christianssund and Lindenow Fjord. Names like Ketil Mountain and Ulamertorsuaq are well known to most rock and mountain climbers in the world. The mountains in this area are just as challenging as the Alps and only experienced climbers should give it a go.
The sealhunters move to the outermost islands in the spring to hunt the big hooded seal, because the seals' migratory route passes through these islands along with the field ice. Here, the hunter culture remains unspoilt for many generations. The supply for summer and winter is prepared on the islands.
The place got its name, Nanortalik, because the polar bears drift by on big ice floes in the field ice from East Greenland. Each year several polarbears are spotted in the area, but they are of no danger to the inhabitants.

The name Stornoway comes from the Norse for "Steering Bay", an indication of the early origins of the town. As the best natural harbor in the Western Isles it was a focus for development, and Stornoway Castle was built as early as 1100 by the MacNicol family. Today's Stornoway is a busy, attractive town and the largest settlement in the Western Isles. The shape of the town is defined by the harbour, which partially surrounds it.
