Surfing and body boarding are popular watersports on the beaches of beautiful Maceio. Frances Beach has great waves all year long, and Avenida da Paz offers amazing sunsets. Maceió's sea has natural pools and reefs a few meters off the coast, that can be accessed by boat or raft sailings. Maceio is known for its delicate craft laces, which can be found in Portal da Barra, and bought directly from the craft women.
Recife is Brazil's fourth largest city and and one of the country's most historic ocean cities. It also has the distinction of not having been founded by the Portuguese. In fact, it was the Dutch Prince Maurice of Nassau who founded Recife in 1637 on reclaimed land after his troops had burned Olinda, the original capital. Recife is an exotic fusion of ancient and modern, threaded by the rivers Capibaribe, Beberibe and Pina, Canal Tacaruna and edged by the scenic Boa Viagem beachfront. Although much of the city center is given over to modern skyscrapers and office buildings, there are still a few quiet squares with a number of impressive churches and lovely public buildings as well as several interesting museums.

Fortaleza is one of Brazil's major cities with a colorful harbor area and a colonial history dating back to 1612. It has developed around the ancient fortress of Our Lady of Assumption. There's much to enjoy in its old center, where visitors can bargain in the market for embroidery, lace and other local handicrafts. In recent times, the city has made attempts to expand the tourist trade and to encourage the construction of luxury hotels along the city's fine beaches.

Today, Santarem is one of the Amazon’s most important trading centers, and is rich in legend and nature. The town is situated at the point where the Tapajos and the Amazon waters meet. This is called the “Wedding of the waters” and is one of Santarem’s major attractions. The lakes and forests of this area are home to numerous species of birds, particularly the white egret.
Boca Da Valeria is a remote little Indian community, set at the entrance of the Valeria river on a 400ft hill overlooking the Amazon River and is reached by zodiac or tender. It is located between Parintins and Santarem. Calls allow exploration of the jungle in quest of monkeys, butterflies and the colourful birdlife, - and the opportunity to buy wooden carvings and gourd masks, and see something of the, simple traditional lifestyle of the villagers.

The little Indian village of Parintins lies beside the river on Tupinambarana Island, amid the largest archipelago of the Lower Amazon. In addition to being site of France's satellite launching base, French Guiana is perhaps best known for the infamous penal colony to which convicts and undesirables were deported from France. For a long time the small archipelago (the Safety Islands) was known by the name of "Devil's Island." The three islands - Devil's Island, Ile Royale and Ile St. Joseph - are about one hour by boat from the mainland. Their notorious convict settlements were built in 1852. On the almost inaccessible Devil's Island, political prisoners like Alfred Dreyfus were held in isolation. The prisoner who became most famous was doubtless Henri Charrière, who was immortalized in the movie "Papillon" for supposedly being the only convict who managed to escape from "the Green Hell." Of 80,000 prisoners sent to the islands, some 50,000 died here. Visit the prison ruins or the Kourou Space Centre.

Mindelo is a lovely port in Cape Verde that was formed around a volcanic crater. Mindelo offers a lively beach at Baia das Gatas where visitors can enjoy the beautiful sandy beach, clear blue water, and listen to the sounds of local musicians. This small capital has a sleepy ambience reminiscent of a large village. Banjul is also a port city acting as a funnel for a large amount of imported goods. Arrecife is not only the capital of Lanzarote or the main locality of Lanzarote's smallest municipality, but also of the chain of small islands which flanks it. What gives the area most character is the coastline with its small islets, most of which become covered during high tide. Places which must be visited are the Castle of San José, seat of the Contempory Art Museum which contains works by Piscasso, Miro, Mompó and César Menrique among many other painters and sculptors from all over the world. This fortress is situated in the east, on a small cliff, and houses different receational installations with a view of the port of Naos and of the Marbles. Another place of unusual interest is "Charco de San Gines" (San Ginés Pool) where water enters the land and where the hermitage was built, around which was formed the first nucleous of fishermen's cottages. This village has changed progressively, but still preserves its fishing village atmosphere. Visitors admire the old "calle real" (Royal Road) which leads to Avenida Marítima, the location of the municipal park.

Gibraltar is the famous promontory located at the western entrance of the Mediterranean, with Spain to the north and, across the Straits, Morocco to the south. The Straits are a channel connecting the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Africa is clearly visible on a fine day. In ancient times, the Rock, as Gibraltar is popularly called, and its counterpart on the African side, Mount Abyla, were known as the Pillars of Hercules. Visitors enjoy historical sites, magnificent views and beautiful beaches. A favorite pastime is strolling along Main Street to browse and shop in the duty-free shops or stop in one of the pubs.
